Line

On July 1st 2005 the embryo of an idea to form this new group was hatched from the deeply held belief that there were many players (or would be players) in the Lowestoft and Waveney districts that were, for what ever reason, not being attracted to the existing Lowestoft Club.

The basis for new group establishment being made on the assumptions that these unknowns might be attracted to playing, by providing facilities for friendly/social chess over a pint, venue being situated in the centre of town and providing parking nearby, all at no cost to the player. With all of these requirements being provided willingly and enthusiastically supported by the Ex-Servicemens Club Committee, with the provision of rooms free of charge, the decision to hatch this fledgling group was positive.

The early months started slowing with only 3 or 4 players attending on a regular basis. Many new potential feathers(players) appeared but for some reason or another, it was found impossible to make them stick. In the dark days before Christmas the mood became downbeat from low turnouts, with doubts being raised for the survival of this-new hatchling. Encouragement from the Clubs Committee to continue into the lighter evenings saved the day, along with weekly entries in the local papers, Lowestoft Journal and Waveney Advertiser, gradually new faces appeared and lifted the clouds and growth started in earnest in late January 2006.

One year in existence and the group now has. 12 to 15 players attending its meetings, with eight of those committing themselves to be available to play competitive league chess for a team ,if entered. With the Clubs. Committee promising full sponsorship for team entry, this action is now proceeding, Further encouragement being achieved from the fact that many of these previously unknowns are newcomers to the game or those that have not played since their school days. Included in this is our first junior and first lady.

This fledgling now looks torward in doing battle, during the coming season, with its more established seniors and graduating into a fully accepted adolescent. In fact, if it can acquire a couple leading wing feathers of around 120+ in the next couple of months, this fledging would have sufficient strength to hopefully make some notable kills.
